My Visit to The Hospital
By Joshua McClain, Student Reporter
A couple days ago I went to the hospital and I was in a room for 4 hours. About halfway through my visit at the hospital the doctor was talking to my dad and she said I would be taking medicine and I had the option of either liquid or pill for… steroids. I took the pill form since this wasn’t the first time I had to go to the hospital for this reason. Because I have a breathing disorder and I have had it 3 other times in my life. This so far is my fourth time having this condition so I already know what I have to do when this starts. Anyways, every other time I had problems breathing I would get an option of either pills or liquid steroids and I always got liquid.
But this time I got steroid pills. If you didn't know steroid pills are basically performance enhancing drugs (in some cases prohibited or not allowed) and in most cases recommended by doctors. This specific steroid was supposed to enhance the performance of my lungs since I couldn't breathe right. And on my prescription it said I had to take 3 pills at the same time on the same day. So I did and a little later I was talking with my dad and ended up yelling at him and he had to tell me to cut it out. And then we had a family meeting and I had insane mood swings crying for no reason one second only to be laughing hysterically the next. My mom thought that I was acting weird, but I didn't notice.
But the next day sealed the deal, the pills have something to do with this. Because about an hour after i took the pill i was super energetic but when my dad told me i could jump on my trampoline i was in there for 30 seconds and it felt like i was in there for 3 hours since when i left the trampoline i was completely exhausted. I cut off some of my hair and I messed up my hairline and now my dad wants to cut it all off.
My mom was fed up with this since she noticed my behavior changed when I took steroids. It wasn’t a full on mystery, so my mom called the hospital and she asked if i could take just one pill a day and they said they would call her later in the day to let her know how many pills i have to take. And after hours of waiting they finally called her back saying that i only needed to take one pill and i did. And I acted just fine. This experience is not one I'd like to have again and if I ever get sick like this again and they ask for liquid pills, I will take the pills.
